Priorities

This past week our team has had the blessing of being at Rehoboth Christian School.  Along with learning about the students and the culture there, we were able to dive into some really great conversations with our hosts.  One morning us girls were talking with our host mom and learned she has a goal to read through the Bible once a month.  We were amazed how she found time to do this being a wife, a mom of two young children, and involved with full time ministry.  We commented on how difficult it must be to balance all of that but the way she saw it was that it helped her to keep God first.

It got me thinking about where God falls on my priority list.  Am I putting Him first?  Or does He continue to come in second after the things that I want? How many times during the week do I hit snooze because I want a few more extra minutes of sleep when really I should be wanting a few more extra minutes with God?

I think sometimes my selfish human nature deceives me into justifying putting my own wants above what God wants for/from me.  There are a number of things I justify putting first.  Sometimes it’s worry, other times it might be sleep, finances, or relationships with others.    Important as they may be, there is never a time where they should take precedence over God.

The greatest commandment that Jesus gives is that we “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37)  God wants all of me all the time.  Not all of me some of the time, some of me all of the time, but ALL of me ALL the time.

I’m still trying to figure out how to go about living out this verse in my everyday life, but I’ve felt challenged to make a change to keep God first. I’d ask that you would join me in making it your heart’s desire to truly learn what it means to put God first and to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
