Hello Everybody!!

We have completed our first few days of tour and God has revealed Himself to us in so many ways already! We have had an extremely busy weekend and had an enjoyable day off today. We left Saturday morning and had our first concert that night in Bagley, MN. We had four concerts within twenty-four hours, about seven hours of drive time, and approximately four hours of sleep!! Needless to say, by the time we arrived in Warroad, MN (within miles of the Canadian border) on Sunday afternoon, we were exhausted, feeling weak and agitated but in that moment, it was incredible to see God's strength in our weakness. I remember being very nervous after our sound check. It did not seem like anything went "right" in my eyes; I was off on a few drum fills, guitars were not working properly, we were having some power issues, etc. Moments prior to hitting the stage in Warroad, the team gathered in a back room and joined together for a time of prayer, inviting Him in and asking Him to play through us. I was amazed to see how we came together as a group and allowed God to take complete control of the evening. It was not in our hands. After speaking with some people after the concert, I was amazed to hear how God used the Creation drama, as well as mine and Matt's testimony to minister to the people of Warroad last night.

I would love to share another experience with you from this past weekend. It came during a youth allnighter lock-in we played for at Grace Community Church in Bagley, MN. As I was behind the kit, I noticed how the youth really were not engaging in the music...it was almost as if they found the concert rather boring or uneventful. For us, it was our first night of tour, and our second concert that evening...not to mention it was a 10:00pm concert. I remember thinking before we even started, "Ok, I just gotta get through this and then I will be able to sleep." I was, in essence, limiting God and really not allowing Him to use ALL of me. However, as I was playing the first few songs, I was opening myself back up to the Holy Spirit for whatever He might have for us for the remainder of the concert.

Before the concert, we were informed that it would be very likely that there would youth there who did not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. We decided we would have three testimonies (Matt, Nolan, and me) as well as the Creation drama. Gretchen also asked me to share the Gospel prior to an Alter Call. Once we started the Creation drama, it was as if the Holy Spirit had entered the room and took complete control of the rest of the evening...Not just entered the room, but truly moved, in a very, very tangible way!! I shared the Gospel, explaining the Cross and how Christ took the punishment that we deserve and placed it upon Himself. I'm not totally sure what I said, but one thing I do know is that the Holy Spirit was speaking through me. I cannot even begin to explain these moments I was experiencing! As I finished, I challenged the teens to come forward and talk with the youth leaders about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ or if they needed prayer, I encouraged them to come forward for that, too. Kara and Wyatt (both guitarists) began playing the beginning of Jesus Paid It All. It was a time of worship for all of us. I wish there was some way to explain this.. The teens were coming forward and praying with the leaders! I was in awe of the Greatness of God! His presence was felt throughout the place that night. It was AMAZING to be brought into worship! This went on for about 20 minutes! There were times I could not stop smiling because I was so in awe of our Creator! The best part of the night was the news we learned the following morning before leaving...

FOUR PEOPLE GAVE THEIR LIVES TO CHRIST!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable! Our God is Indescribable and what a blessing it was to see God working through us to advance HIS Kingdom!

Thank you all for your continual love, support, and prayers! We are looking forward to seeing you on the road!! :) :) :)

Blessings!!

Hello All!

Happy Labor Day! We have been "on the road" now since Friday and had the opportunity to worship with Living Hope Community Church in Fox Lake Wisconsin yesterday morning. What a wonderful time of worship and fellowship. God was right in the middle of it all; He is ALREADY showing himself!

Before church yesterday I spent some time in God's word, mulling over the courage of those who had the guts to talk freely about Jesus and in particular our salvation through Him. I have always been kind of scared about "offending" someone or speaking too freely with them. I can easily talk about what Jesus has done in my life but it has always been a little harder for me to suggest to someone else they may need Jesus too. I have often gotten frustrated over the fact that it seems so easy for some of the Biblical characters to speak so freely. They spoke and people listened--and more importantly were changed. Come on, can it be that easy? It occurred to me then that God has a hand in it all. In the words that come out of our mouths but even before that in the people he brings us to speak to. Just as He brought people to those in the bible, He also brings to us those who need to hear about the hope Christ brings. He knows exactly who needs to hear His message. It has nothing to do with us, He is running the show.

After the church service yesterday I was amazed at the people who came up to us and were so willing to talk about their lives and their struggles. God knew what they needed to hear that day and and gave us the chance to speak to them. How cool is that! I was once again amazed at the character of God and His willingness to use us if we just surrender to our weaknesses so that He can show Himself.

We are off to Chicago tomorrow. We will be at three inner-city rescue missions this week as well as a few other venues. Be in prayer with us for those we will have the opportunity to minister to this week!

Unity

John 17:20-21 (NASB) “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.”

It has become popular in some circles of Evangelicalism to refer to the Church as divided. Denomination fights denomination on the subjects of the Holy Spirit, divine sovereignty, election, and justification. I myself believe certain things regarding these subjects, and expect of my fellow Christian a certain level of familiarity with these subjects as well. I also expect many, many Christian people to disagree with what I might have to say about these things. As I minister with my team to various local bodies, how should we view the denominations we minister to?

God has been teaching me some things about unity in the past two weeks of training. We have often looked to Ephesians 2 in our Bible studies:

“for through Him we both [the Jews and the Gentiles] have our access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you [gentiles] are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints, and are of God’s household, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit.” -Ephesians 2:18-22

I’ll be honest: In taking part in divisive arguing, harboring bitterness in my heart toward my brother or sister with whom I disagree, and portraying my fellow Christians in such a way that emphasizes our differences over our common wealth in Christ, I have been guilty. But when talking about the actual attributes of the Church, the Bride of Christ, what does Scripture never fail to testify to? Our oneness in Christ.

“‘They shall be My people, and I will be their God; and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me always, for their own good and for the good of their children after them.” -Jeremiah 32:38-39

In bearing witness to the words of God in prophesy, Jeremiah declares that the members of the new covenant will have “one heart and one way,” unified. So, if the Church has itself been divided, if it is no longer one, then there is not only a prayer from the Son left unfulfilled by the Father, but also a promise made by God regarding the New Covenant that has been broken. The Church, the Bride of Christ, is not divided. She is weak at times and often conflicted with Herself, but She is one. All of us who are of Christ have been unified into one body of brothers and sisters, and though we disagree with one another on many counts, we have all sinned. We have all been judged guilty of a crime worthy of a Second Death. We have all fallen beyond hope, only to have our hope restored to us by the blood of the lamb. As Ephesians goes on to read:

“Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” -Ephesians 4:1-7

God would have us view one another with one thing in mind: that Christ died for us all and, if a person is of the Body of Christ, He or She has been shown an equal measure of mercy and grace as we have. And if, by the grace of God, I have attained to some level of the knowledge of God, what have I gained that was not given to me, and if it was given to me, then why do I boast?

So be encouraged in the insight you have been given by our mutual Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus, who has reconciled you to Himself by the expenditure of the Father’s wrath at Golgotha. As He has loved us, let us love one another.

Kerry Shawgo

Jim has been known to occasionally break out into accents of all types. Pirate, British, you name it. Jim also loves tea. A LOT.

Next up, Gretchen! She will be one of our talented female vocalists, and along with that, will be sharing the keyboard! Gretchen is a huge fan of office supplies, but has not ever tried chocolate milk.

The second of our amazingly gifted female vocalists, Rachel! Rachel will also be sharing the keys duties, along with Gretchen, which she is mostly excited for. Rachel has been in a long-term relationship with Diet Coke, and doesn't foresee that changing anytime soon.

Next Big-city Tim, owning the bass! Tim is a big fan of black socks and squeaky shoes, and enjoys throwing things. Inside or Outside. Tim will be pulling double duty as our bassist, and our tech!

Now, our other guitarist Jenn! Jenn will be playing rhythm guitar, and is super excited for this year, which she has been planning for a long time! Jenn loves cooking and doing things outside. But not at the same time.

And finally, Aaron! (Me) I am super excited for this, my second year of fulltime, and will be playing drums! I've been known to use cheesy puns from time to time, but I try not to make it a habit.

Well, now you know a little bit more about our team!

If you could be joining us in prayer for this year, that we would allow God to work through us and that we would be open to the Spirit's direction and calling for this year, and beyond! Also for health, team unity, and for open hearts and ears to the people that we will reach this year with our ministry! Thank you so much!

See you guys soon!

-Aaron, on behalf of 14:21

God bless!

One last time...

Well, it has been just over a week since we said goodbye to Guatemala, but though this experience has come to an end I am thrilled to be able to say that the lessons we have learned through it have not ended. Since coming back from Guatemala I have really begun to appreciate so much of what God was doing there in and through my team. I know that I am not alone in saying that my life will be different now because of what I experienced with CTI in Guatemala this summer. It was so cool on debriefing day to hear all about how the teams, not just team Guatemala but team Mozambique and Honduras as well, were going to walk away from this summer not remembering what they had done, but what they had seen God do. And that of course is exactly why we do what we do, for the opportunity to see and experience God “doing” in and through us, and the people around us.

To everyone who spent so much time and energy to help give us this experience, God has truly blessed us through you, thank you for your prayers and support.
-Team Guatemala 2010

Every person, every moment

A week has passed since returning from Honduras and I know already our lives have changed because of these last 6 weeks with CTI. I have seen a great God to mighty things as each one of us stepped out of our comfort zone and gave God control. I watched over and over as the Lord brought us up mountainsides, across rivers, inside churches, on soccer fields, among youth, and through trials and joys. Every member of the team has learned different lessons and been changed and challenged in new ways, but one thing remains the same and will always remain. God's love is for EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE. This is the single message we can bring as we walk through our lives. Sure it may seem like the opportunities and experiences of Honduras were unique and a once in a lifetime chance. We may struggle to return to "normal life" as we adjust and wonder whether we can make as big a difference when we're home. But it's not the truth. The truth it is doesn't matter where we are or what we are doing... God's love is the same and His message MUST be brought and shared with everyone around us. So whether we are in Honduras on a bus or sitting in a classroom or cubical we need to let the gospel penetrate our lives and overflow into everything we are and everything we do. Just as we learned so clearly from Mauricio while in Honduras - every moment is a choice, each person an opportunity, what are we going to do with it? I challenge myself, my team, and each of you who are reading this and have been praying for our team these past 6 weeks to see each moment, each person as a chance to share the love of God. If we commit to this I know we won't be disappointed. In fact we will stand amazed at the Lord's greatness as He chooses to use us to display His love on earth at home, at school, at work, or around the world.

May we keep loving, learning, laughing, and living,
Carrie VanderHorst & Team Honduras

Here are a few glimpses of God's love on earth:

Final Post

to all our wonderful friends and supporters -

it's our very last blog post, and we just want to try and express the gratitude we have for all of your prayers and support these past six weeks. We arrived back in Minnesota on Monday night (almost early Tuesday morning) and had our last day as a team together on Tuesday, when we debriefed both as a team and individuals and then had our public Question and Answer session, finished off by the final concert at the end of the night. We were so blessed to hear so many stories of God's faithfulness from teams Honduras and Guatemala as well as share what He did in Africa and is continuing to do as we go home and continue to be faithful to what He has called us to.

It seemed like each person on our team was learning something different, yet the same lesson was weaved through each person's experience - dependence on God. Over and over again we learned as team that His love never fails and we are called to and able to trust that if we give our all, our everything, He is faithful to show us where He is leading us to go and will draw us closer to Himself. He really is enough in every way. .and He did so much work in our lives and allowed us to do His work in the lives of people across the world in Mozambique. From Him we were given love to love these people and to share in His joy - we are so, so blessed.

Thank you again, so much, and know that all of your prayers and support were so, so appreciated - and that God is faithful to continue the good work He has begun in us and in you.

We just wanted to quickly let you all know that we will be flying out
of Maputo tomorrow morning (Sunday, August 15th) and will be arriving
in Minneapolis, MN on Monday evening. Prayers for safe travel and
sanity in getting through all the airline procedures would be so
appreciated and we'll post one final blog and photos when we return to
the States. Again - we are so, so blessed to have been able to have
this opportunity to come to Mozambique and we thank you so much for
blessing us in your prayers and support. We can't wait to share what
God has done in His faithfulness.
See you soon!

thought we'd check in after our latest excursion up to San Raymundo. We left
last Sunday and got there just in time for the National Day of Prayer event
that the YFC was hosting. We were amazed by how many people had gathered on a
rainy afternoon to pray for the youth of Guatemala. There were two bands and
five speakers from all over the country gathered to lead their nation in
interceding for the youth. It was awesome.

next day we had a chance to visit some families in a village near by to see how
they make some of the goods we had seen in the markets. We watched the women
you see in the picture here cut, strip and bend bamboo into beautiful baskets.
It was fascinating to watch them work, and they were generous in explaining the
processes and sharing a bit of their lives with us. In the four days were were
there we played six concerts, most of them in schools. At every single one of
the concerts we had an opportunity to pray with the students who had committed
their lives to Christ, and that experience itself has been a blessing to us
beyond what any of us had expected. We are now back in Guatemala City and
gearing up for our last few days. **sniff, sniff**

ended up without any concerts today due to some trouble with the vehicles, but
we were not idle by any stretch of the imagination. We spent the day washing
out recently repaired van and truck so that their exteriors fit their shiny new
parts, and we also had some time to practice (a rarity while overseas)! It was
a wonderful day spent together at "home." Tomorrow we have three
concerts scheduled and only three more after that until we see you all again.
Please pray for us as we strive to maintain our focus and learn about what we
will do with the lessons we've learned and the love we've experienced while we
have been here. We can't wait to see you all again and hear about what God has
been doing in your lives in the last 5 weeks. Until then, we urge you, as we
urge ourselves, to continue to live a life worthy of the calling you've
received.

Our Guatemala team has recently been travelling around the
country, visiting the towns of San Juan Sacotupiquas and San Remundo. They
were able to send this brief update of what they’ve been up to:

We had a really great trip! we
played at a National Day of Prayer rally in a mountain town, then spent three
nights in another mountain town and played at schools in the surrounding area.
The family that we stayed with was awesome and so were all the people that we
met. I'm sure you will hear all about it later but for now let me sum it up by
saying one word "Mayan!!"

Tomorrow we had 2 concerts planned
but now they have been canceled because of vehicle problems. So we will pick it
back up on Friday with 3 more concerts. Having tomorrow off is actually quite a
blessing because we have been experiencing a few equipment issues that we have
had no time to look into.

Hope all is well. We are praying
for you and the incoming fulltimers.

Are we really "developing Christian leadership and character"?

This week, we've been considering two questions that we use to evaluate our ministry activites at CTI. We looked first at the question: Are we really helping our partners around the world reach young people with the Gospel?

The second question that we ask ourselves in order to make sure our ministry actions are moving us towards fulfilling our vision is this: Is what we are doing (or considering) actually contributing to the development of Christian leadership and character in our participants?

Like the first question, this one is often answered most objectively when someone who has been impacted by one of our programs chooses to share about it in their own words. We recently received such a note from an alum of last year's fulltime program. We share it with you here as a way to glorify our great God, who is making Himself known to those who are seeking Him through this experience:

My Dearest CTIers,

Blessings!!

I know I left you just a little over a week ago, but God has been teaching me and confirming so much just within these past couple days, so I sensed the urgency to update you again before I head back [home] to Taiwan tomorrow.

I was having a very difficulty time leaving CTI. I was really angry at God for taking me away from this CTI community that I am so in love with. I wanted to stay, and I was complaining to God for not showing me the next step. For the past 2 weeks, I was struggling with God and what He has for me.

Even when I refused to listen to God, He never gave up on me. He sent at least 7 people to meet with me since I arrived in Houston, and while I got to share with each one of them individually about CTI and Taiwan, God gradually opened my eyes and my heart to see that I was being very selfish. I forgot that God gave me this passion for Taiwan, I forgot that during my time with CTI, God confirmed and called me back to Taiwan. Since I was so comfortable and safe in the CTI community, I put God's calling aside and started to plan things my way. However, I was torn between the will of GOD and the will of ME.

Long story short, I got a chance to visit Dallas this past Wednesday, and while driving 5 hours without ipod or any CD, my only option was the radio. As I was tuning the radio, God spoke to me through a random sermon on Abraham and Sarah. The sermon was about Genesis 15-18. The pastor talked about how God promised Abraham that he will have a son. But instead of trusting God, Sarah and Abraham decided to do things their own way. God asked Abraham to WAIT, and He will give Abraham a son. But both Sarah and Abraham relied on their human wisdom, which caused God's promise to delay for about 13 years.

I was doubting that God really has something more for me. I really thought that CTI was it. I wanted to plan something "better." God woke me up that morning while I was driving, and He again reaffirmed me that, "No, I don't really know what's ahead for me in Taiwan, but Genesis 18:14 says, "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" Even after that sermon in the car, God continued to speak to me through several events: a VBS prayer on "being patient and wait upon the Lord," a daily devotion note card on "God is in control," and on my way back from Dallas today, the radio had another sermon with a different pastor speaking about the EXACT Genesis passage that I heard on Wednesday, on "Trusting the Lord."

I think it's pretty obvious that God wants me to WAIT and TRUST HIM. I have no plan at all and have no idea what's going to happen in Taiwan, but now I have tremendous PEACE knowing that my God is in control, and He wants to take care of me.

Thank you, each one of you for an amazing year. You are a blessing to me, and each one of you had taught me a lesson or impacted my life in a great way. God used you to keep me going. I will keep you posted once I am in Taiwan, I know God will work and provide accordingly.

THANK YOU. Really. THANK YOU.

Blessings and much Love,

Kylie

We praise God for revealing His faithfulness to us through team members like Kylie. Be encouraged that the CTI community really is providing opportunities through which God is developing Christian leadership and character!
