The phrase is found in Revelation 21:5 where we see Jesus, standing victorious at the end of the ages, wiping away every tear and abolishing pain and death forever.  In triumph, he proclaims in a loud voice, “Behold, I am making all things new!” What a glorious picture of God's redemptive work! God speaks to his people and the former things pass away under the joyous  anticipation of what God will do next.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come.” If we are in Christ, we have a new identity – no longer aliens and strangers but members of God’s household. Our old selves are gone - dead – and with them all the sin, guilt and punishment that defined them.  God has made us new, but so often we forget that our new identity in him calls for a new way of living.  As his children, God wants us to walk in his ways, and in light of his new work in us cast off everything that is not of him.  Obstacles abound when it comes to following him; our fear can cause us to hesitate and the struggles of life can discourage us from pressing on. However, rather than letting “the former things” rule us, our all-powerful God (who has begun a work in us), calls us forward to trust in his loving character, to look to Jesus (as savior and example), and to follow him in light of his promise.

Where has God been calling you?  Have you put off getting rid of the “old man” and donning the new?  Would he have you ”fight the good fight” in the midst of trial?  Or perhaps spread the news of his Gospel?  Whatever the case, may the hope of God’s new work draw you forth like the sun does new growth.  May you be encouraged to continue shining, sharing, and growing - firmly rooted in Christ, pressing on till he makes all things new.
